On Tuesday we went in to the doctor's for the girls 9 month check-up (at 10 months or 8 adjusted :)). Dr. Fruin was surprised to see how big they are and she even mentioned that at 2 years that we probably wouldn't be able to tell that they were preemie anymore :). 2 years is what they mentioned when we were in the NICU but it is nice for our pediatrician to also think that others won't be able to tell they were preemie at 2 years.
Here are the stats for the girls. They are pretty much the same in everything except for weight where they are an ounce apart.
Eve
Weight: 17 lbs 3 oz (10th percentile)
Length: 28 in (50th percentile)
Head: 17 1/2 in (5oth percentile)
Savannah
Weight: 17 lbs 2 oz (10th percentile)
Length: 28 in (50th percentile)
Head: 17 1/2 in (50th percentile)
If you adjust their age they are about average for weight and for height they are a little above average.
The other noteworthy news that we got from the pediatrician was that I get to take the girls to a pediatric ophthalmologist. Yipee!! :) The reason is we have never had their eyes checked before and since they were two months early the doctor thought it would be a good idea. Plus, Savannah's right eye goes in slightly when she stares at things (not bad by any means, but just slightly). Since Ben had a lazy eye when he was little and Ben and I both have really bad eyesight, Dr. Fruin thought it wouldn't hurt to get it checked out. The earliest they could get us in was the end of May but at least I scheduled the appointment. Too bad the pediatric ophthalmologist that she recommended is in SLC, but hopefully we won't have to go down there too many times.
We have had quite the eventful week this week. We took the girls out for the first time to an actual restaurant with us. They did surprisingly well. We went to Chilies. We thought the girls wouldn't do too horribly here because it is loud thus their jabbering would hardly be noticed :). The girls did well for the first 45 minutes but the last 45 minutes they got a bit bored. Things we learned were that the girls like french fries and that Savannah is now possessive of toys. Eve was playing with a stuffed toy bug across the table from Savannah and Savannah just started whining and reaching for the bug. Ben and I soon caught on to what Sav wanted and decided to see if Eve would be willing to switch toys. We showed Eve the frog Sav was playing with and she was happy to play with that. So we switched toys and everyone was happy.
At the doctor's visit, she mentioned that we should check our car seats because usually around 9 months to a year kids start growing out of their old car seats. The girls still had about 5 more inches to go before we have to switch them out of their old car seat, but I had gotten 2 coupons in the mail from Babies-R-Us that were 20% off any item in the store. Thus, on Wednesday I went shopping for new convertible car seats. Before I left, I asked Ben if I should take his car or if the car seats would fit in mine. He assured me that my car would fit the car seats. I went to Babies-R-Us and after pushing a cart with a car seat and dragging the other car seat box across the floor to the register, I finally purchased both car seats. When I got the car seats out to the car, I realized that I had a problem. These boxes were HUGE and there was no way that both of them would be fitting in my car. I knew I was going to have to call Ben and have him meet me at Babies-R-Us. As I was getting out my phone I realized that Ben couldn't come to get me. The night before we had purchased a new car battery for Ben's car and he hadn't put the car battery in. Even if he wanted to put the car battery in and come to me he couldn't because the car battery was in the trunk of my car. After some maneuvering, I was able to get one of the boxes into the back seat of my car. I tried to get the other box in the front seat of my car, but my car was too small for that. Since I am excellent at problem solving :), I decided the only way I was going to get both car seats home was to take the other one out of the box. I eventually got home and informed Ben that my car was NOT big enough to transport both boxes.
That same night at about 3 in the morning a smoke alarm in our house went off announcing that it's battery was low. I ignored it the first time, but the second time it woke me out of my peaceful slumber. I woke Ben up and we began our scavenger hunt of trying to figure out which smoke detector's battery was low. I don't get why they have to go off at 3 in the morning and why they can't go off at a more reasonable hour, but alas they don't. We were able to determine that the smoke detector was upstairs. We thought it was the one in our bedroom and we knew we were going to be in trouble. We read in the manual that it will go off every 15 minutes for the first hour and then after that it will beep every minute. If you remove the battery it will also beep, thus we knew we had to deal with the problem and we had no 9 volt batteries. Our ceilings in our bedroom are vaulted 9 ft (I think). Even with our step ladder Ben was about a foot short from reaching the detector and to make matters worse we don't own a ladder. I came up with a brilliant idea that we would stack our two guest mattresses on top of each other and then put the step ladder on top of that. It wasn't the most stable creation but if I held on tight Ben could reach the smoke detector. I headed off to Smith's to buy 9-volt batteries and when I got back Ben informed me that it was the hallway smoke detector that was going off. Lucky for us and for Ben's life! We have now decided we need to buy a ladder before the bedroom smoke detector's battery is low. Ben doesn't want to try my two mattresses plus a step ladder idea. He thought it was a bit dangerous, but it would have gotten the job done at 3 in the morning :).
Such good problem solving!
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised that their weight is just normal. They seem chunky to me!
See, you always wondered why you had to take so much math and work with so many logic problems - who knew it would be for such a cause as this! Of course, a couple of simple measurements could have helped too! I'm glad you figured it all out without
ReplyDeletea) giving up and taking the boxes back in the store
b) asking if they delivered
c)donating your used car seats to the first taker in the parking lot and switching it all out right there.
d) blaming it all on Ben.
Glad too that Ben survived the attempted murder that you had planned by putting him up on those mattresses!
