"Finger" Toes

I've realized that it is super hard to see your girls hooked up to so many tubes and monitors, but I know it is for the best. Since Savannah needed to be intubated a few nights ago to help her breathe with her recent pneumothorax injury, they took off the CPAP and thus I got to see what her nose looked like. They also started an IV in her head so I finally got to see what her hair looked like. Ben and I suspected that it would be blonde but we hadn't seen for sure. Who knows how long she will have hair but it was nice to see my cute little girl with her fuzzy hair :D. Here is a picture of Savannah a day after she got her chest tube in and was intubated.

Ben and I have been looking at the girls to determine which features they have of each of us, but with them being hooked up to the machines it makes it a little difficult. One thing we have realized is that both of the girls have Ben's "Finger" toes, his long skinny toes. We've tried to see whose nose they have but have yet to figure out that part :).

Yesterday was a good day. I got to hold Eve while they were switching out her bedding. That was the first time I had ever held her. I get to touch the girls' skin every day but I never have gotten to hold them. It was such a precious experience to be able to hold her, even if it was only for a short period of time. Ben got to hold her as they were determining her weight so we each got a little snuggle time with our little girl. Ben and I realized that we can't wait for the girls to come home so we can hold them and snuggle them whenever we would like. Yesterday when I came to visit, Eve was sporting some AWESOME sunglasses. I forgot to take pictures but I will try to do that later this week. Eve was becoming a little jaundiced so they put her under the lights with some lovely foam sunglasses. I think she looked pretty cute with her sunglasses and her hat. The doctors also decided to give Eve a little sedative yesterday because she really HATES the CPAP machine (I wonder why :)). She gets really stressed and thus her oxygen level goes down. Thus, they gave her a little bit of sedatives to have her not fight the machine so much. Her breathing will improve if she lets the machine work for her.

Savannah is still intubated and has a chest tube. The nurses told us that there is still some air in her lungs that they are trying to remove to make sure everything has healed appropriately. Last night, they moved the chest tube a little bit to try to remove the last bit of air. They did start an arterial line on Savannah this way they don't have to poke her every time they do a blood gas or any other type of draw. They are thinking that Savannah will most likely be under the lights too by tomorrow as she is looking a little jaundiced.

Last night Ben's really good friend, Jesse, came to visit. Besides my parents, he was the girls first official visitor that got to touch the girls! Coming to visit the NICU is a little bit stressful in and of itself because the girls have a lot of tubes coming out of them, but I know the girls appreciated having a new face come to visit them.

I learned that I get discharged tomorrow for which I am very grateful. By the time I have been discharged I will have been in the hospital about 7 weeks. I am happy to be getting out of the hospital, but it is hard that the girls have to stay here. I know it is for the best considering the doctors and nurses are taking such good care of our girls. I'll try to keep the blog updated on the status of the girls and I will also apologize if the blog is a repeat of things you already knew. I can't always remember what I have already told people.

  1. I can't wait to touch those little darlings!
I thought those toes looked like Ben's, except smaller!
That will be good for you and Ben to finally be in your new
home together, only you will be missing the other half of your
    family for a bit!

  2. Cute little baby nose! And I didn't even think about you not being able to hold her. I'm glad you got to do that finally. :)

  3. I'm so glad you finally got to hold Eve! I had been wondering about that, thinking it must be difficult to just have to watch them all hooked up to tubes and machines. I hope you enjoy looking at more than the same four walls, Michelle, though leaving the girls must be rough.
